Jay Fancher #7

Where were you born?
I was born in Carmel California but grew up in Queens New York

Current Occupation
Had my own mural business for over 17 years. Then was a pastor at Greater Chicago Church for 3 years before stepping down to plant Greater Chicago Arts church in the city. So now my only paid position is Senior Instructor for Derby Lite.

How old were you when you first skated?
I loved being on wheels from the get go. I remember having those metal skates that extended and went over your shoes, I must  been 7 or 8 years old. I would skate up and down the block with those metal wheels for hours. Then in third grade I remember going to the skating rink for our class trip and got to hold a boys hand for the first time at the rink! It was a BIG deal!

What college did you attend?
I started out my college career at Southern Illinois University and finished at Columbia College in Chicago studying Fashion Design and Sign Language.

Did you practice any other sports in high school or college?
When I was younger I took tap, ballet, and jazz for 8 years. Played soccer for 8 years, 4 of which was all through High School.

What you would tell a young girl who wanted to play roller derby?
Well I'm actually going through this right now. My 16 year old daughter wants to play on the Red Hots and I told her absolutely! You can do whatever you set your mind too and I will support you through every moment of it. I also told her that you will fall, you will get hurt (physically and mentally), but get back up every time. That's what's going to make you a good skater and a good person in life.

What is your favorite thing about roller derby?
Besides the fact that derby is a way that I disguise my exercise as a fun, I love the team comradery. They are your second family. They come to your aid when you get hurt, when you're celebrating, when you need a shoulder to cry on.

How far you travel to practice?
Getting to practice only takes me about 20 minutes.

What has been the best roller derby game you have played?
Winning the Ivy King Cup championship in 2012

Have you played roller derby on other teams?
I used to play for the Windy City Rollers: Manic Attackers and Third Coast

What is your favorite city in the world?
New York

What is your favorite T.V. show?
Downton Abbey

And your favorite movie?
Princess Bride

What you do for charity/volunteering?
I work with an organization called Dream Chicago. We partner with Chicago Public Schools and their art teachers and work with the children to help them dream bigger dreams. We work with the school and the children to also create an environment within their school where they can go and dream about what they want for their future!

Who would you most like to meet?
My birth father.

What's hot right now?
Coming to see the Chicago Red Hots skate fast and hard!

What's not right now?
Sitting on your couch watching nothing exciting, just flipping through channels, even though you can just dvr it anyway and watch that mediocre show anytime you want.
